Never Lose a Photo Again: How to Back Up Your Precious Memories

By FixMyTech · June 2026 · About a 5-minute read

Think about the photos on your phone right now — grandchildren, holidays, the faces of people you love, some of whom may no longer be with us. Now imagine that phone slipping into a sink, or simply stopping one morning. Without a backup, those memories would be gone forever. The wonderful news is that protecting them takes just a few minutes, and once it's set up, it happens automatically.

First, what is "the cloud"?

People throw around the word "cloud" like it's something mysterious. It isn't. The cloud simply means a safe copy of your photos kept on the internet, on secure computers owned by a trusted company like Apple or Google. If your phone is ever lost, broken, or stolen, your photos are still there — you just sign in on a new device and they come right back.

Turn on automatic backup (this is the big one)

Your phone can quietly copy every new photo to the cloud all by itself. Here's how to switch it on:

That's really it. From now on, every picture you take is safely copied without you doing a thing.

Good to know: The free amount of space fills up eventually, especially with videos. When it does, you can pay a small monthly fee for more room — usually a dollar or two. It's some of the best money you'll ever spend for peace of mind.

For extra peace of mind: keep a second copy

The safest approach is to have your memories in two places. In addition to the cloud, you can copy your favorite photos onto a computer or a small "external hard drive" (a little device that stores files). That way, even in the rare case something goes wrong with one copy, you're still covered.

How to check it's actually working

A backup only helps if it's truly running. To be sure, take a quick photo, wait a minute, then open your iCloud or Google Photos and confirm the new picture appears there. If it does, congratulations — your memories are protected.

You don't need to understand the technology behind any of this. You just need it turned on. And once it is, you can relax, knowing the faces and moments you treasure are safe.
